The comet goldfish is a type of single-tailed goldfish that originated in the United States. It's similar to the common goldfish but a bit smaller and slimmer, and its distinctive feature is its long, deeply forked tail. Unlike common goldfish, comets come in a variety of colors.

This goldfish breed was developed by Hugo Mulertt, a government worker, in the 1880s. The first sightings of comet goldfish were in the ponds of the U.S. Government Fish Commission in Washington, D.C. Mulertt later introduced the comet goldfish to the fish-keeping market.

Comet goldfish have a unique appearance with a long, single, and deeply forked tail fin. They come in colors like yellow, orange, red, white, and red-and-white. The red color is often seen on the tailfin and dorsal fin, and sometimes on the pelvic fin.

Comets are known for being more active compared to other goldfish breeds. They can be seen darting around their tank in a playful manner. Due to their hardy and active nature, as well as their ease of care, comets are well-suited for ponds and outdoor pools. They are commonly kept with koi in outdoor ponds. The natural lifespan of comets is typically between 5 to 14 years, but they may live even longer under optimal conditions.
