The freshwater tiger moray eel (Gymnothorax polyuranodon), while often marketed as a freshwater species, typically thrives in brackish or slightly saline environments. In the wild, they are found in the estuaries and rivers of Southeast Asia and Oceania, where the salinity fluctuates between freshwater and saltwater. For home aquariums, it is essential to maintain water conditions with low to moderate salinity (around 1.005-1.015 specific gravity), and ensure the water is well-oxygenated with good filtration. The pH level should ideally range between 7.0 and 8.5, and water temperatures between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F) closely mimic their natural habitat. Tiger morays are notoriously sensitive to poor water quality, necessitating regular maintenance and water testing to keep conditions stable.

In terms of diet, tiger moray eels are carnivorous and will readily accept a variety of meaty foods such as fish, shrimp, and squid. They prefer live or frozen food over dry pellets and may need to be coaxed into eating initially when introduced to a new environment. As semi-aggressive predators, they are best housed with larger, robust tank mates that can handle their territorial nature, but care should be taken not to house them with small fish, as these may be mistaken for prey. Tiger morays are also solitary creatures, and compatibility with other eels or similarly sized fish should be carefully considered to avoid territorial disputes. Their size, sensitivity to water conditions, and specific dietary needs make them more suitable for experienced aquarists rather than beginners.
