Axolotols are critically endangered and In the past two decades, the wild population of the axolotl has fallen sixtyfold. Today there are estimated to be between 700 and 1,200 axolotls in the wild. The primary threat to axolotls is habitat loss and the degradation of what little habitat remains.
Mexican axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) salamanders are amphibians that spend their whole lives underwater. Axolotls have long fascinated scientists for their ability to regenerate lost body parts and for their rare trait of neoteny, which means they retain larval features throughout life.
People often go to the movies to see infamous heroes, such as Wolverine and Deadpool, fight villain after villain with no fear. Their regeneration ability allows them to charge armies with confidence and gives them the appearance of a god. Unlike these fictional characters, most vertebrates are restricted in their ability to regenerate. But, the axolotl is an exception.
At Melbourne Tropical Fish, all our Axolotls are tank bred in Australia.
