Oscar Fish are intelligent and territorial freshwater fish, best suited to experienced aquarists. They thrive in warm, well-filtered aquariums with plenty of space—ideally 55 gallons or more per fish—as they can grow quite large. Compatibility is best with other large, similarly tempered species, as they may bully or eat smaller tank mates. For breeding, a bonded pair will often choose and clean a flat surface to lay eggs. Stable water conditions, slightly elevated temperatures around 28°C, and low stress are key to encouraging successful spawning.
